Online Bingo Trends in the UK
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 | 9:30 amA looked at business reports and surveys from a variety of sources from the end of last year to most recently to get a sense of whether online Bingo is still increasing in popularity or reaching saturation point.
Surveys show that online Bingo is far more popular the further north you go in the UK, with London only having a mere 4% of online Bingo players. Why is that? Are the other attractions of London so many and varied that Bingo will always be way down on people’s lists of things to do? Was it always that way? It appears not- Bingo was very popular in London and the South coast resorts in the 50’s and 60’s, but it seems that the move from live Bingo to online has not swept London and the South along with it as it appears to have the central and Northern parts of the UK.
One of the draws of online Bingo is its accessibility. You haven’t got to wait for the Bingo hall to open its doors at 2pm to get a game, only to be emptied out onto a cold and bus-less street at 11pm as it used to be in the area of London where I grew up. Once you’ve signed up to a site, you can normally be playing a game within a few minutes of switching on your laptop or PC, day or night. And that shows in surveys- nearly half those surveyed said they usually played every day! The same proportion, nearly half, said that they had met and made friends while playing Bingo online, indicating that the trend in social networking such as through twitter and Face book, was alive and well and growing in online Bingo. When asked how would they want their lives to change, over half said to be better off, and have more disposable income. Therefore the urge to win big is still alive and well and living in online Bingo players!
Information drawn from online sites seems to show that the UK is the fastest growing market for online Bingo, and the growth of new sites almost weekly, seem to confirm this. Will there come a point where all those who want to play online Bingo have found their preferred sites, and newcomers will go to the wall because there are insufficient new players to entice, too much competition, and the larger established sites have sufficient resources to give handsome loyalty rewards to keep their players from straying away!
Finally, it seems 8 out of 10 players in the UK are women… how things have changed from when I used to go to live (or “land-based Bingo” as it is called these days) Bingo, when the entire family was there, husbands and dads as well!
